Technorati "the authority on what's going on in the world of weblogs"

On The Technorati "About Us" page, Technorati claims they are, "the authority on what's going on in the world of weblogs," and that they are currently tracking 17.3 million sites and 1.5 billion links.

A quick search tonite for "Wisconsin" on Technorati yielded 20 Weblogs posted in the last hour containing the keyword for the Badger State. A similar search on Google yielded one blog post each in the last three, four and twelve hours, with the next results consisting of posts several days to weeks old. Google's blog search feature (at http://blogsearch.google.com/) is only a few days old, and likely to improve - but it will have to improve a ton to come close to the real-time results http://www.technorati.com is generating.

Technorati is developing Developers Tools including APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and tracks some two million tags. The site offers a tag generator to help track your blog. The most popular (in real-time) 250 tags are shown on the site, sized in fonts relative to their current popularity.

Betraying my absolute newbieness here, but what are splogs?

Sorry if the info's available somewhere in webloggers.org and I haven't been able to find it yet.

Deepak, thanks for checking back in regularly...splogs have to be Spam Blogs.

Randy, great observation. I didn't see any of those at the time I checked Wisconsin in Technorati. If they're fooled that much at any time, though, it sure dilutes the effectiveness of blog searches and what you can 'count' on in quantity - but not quality.
