Default Too many Blogs?!

How many of you think there are too many blogs around... some of them just not having any traffic, content at all ?

Thats wat i read people saying, but nah ... i don't think theres over-blogging at all !!

Not a bad question, really. I know I have 3 or 4 half-hearted efforts at blogging from a few years ago that are just sitting out there.

Never too many blogs from the point of view of each individual blogger, I suppose. I mean, their blog is needed/wanted/not too many...whether they do anything worthwhile (in the eyes of other people) with it or not.

A few months ago Google and MSN were doing a publicity battle, each claiming they had more blogs than the other. About 7 million blogs apiece. They would do well to get people who have posted in "x" weeks or months to come back and post. Can't really threaten to take a blog down if it isn't used in a certain length of time without a backlash of people leaving their service.

Interesting question. Thanks.

Regards,
Keith

I think ultimately we'll see a hybrid of the blog and website and more of them.. the major services are offering blogs (Yahoo 360, et al), it can't help but catch on.

While blogging is a lot of fun for most folks, there are many who do it just for the sake of adsense income. since you need a lot of traffic to actually make decent money off adsense alone, it takes time for blogs to start showing a decent ROE (return on effort). Many bloggers just get discouraged by the long wait and the effort involved.. and quit... that's one of the reasons why you have so many blogs that show a lot of activity for a while.....and then suddenly one fine morning the blog owner decides that it aint worth it any more.... and thats the end of the story.

That's one of the reasons why I feel that one should only blog if one has a real interest in it irrespective of what one earns...

Agreed, maybe this will finaly be a way to reinstate more reading & writing into the world...nowadays it seems many people either "cant be bothered" or just cant fullstop.

I wonder what the percentage of those using hosted services vs hosting their own is?

I've tried hosted services like blogger and don't care for them, but how many blog at MySpace or Facebook? I'll bet the numbers actually approach those of Blogger, et al..

Well, the way I look at it.
All those free blogs, the vast majority are put up and something posted.
Then never again.
They just sit there gathering electronic dust.

Lot of people get into blogging using free services and once they see it is work, they walk away.

If all the free services today or pick a day shortly, deleted all those blogs that have not been updated in say, 6 months to a year, the numbers would drop dramatically.

Look at those who advertise your link, your post, in xxx number of blogs.
So simple to set up 100's of blogs on a free service.
Then sell off links, etc.
I avoid those like the plague as those blogs are really dead ones.

If they deleted the blogs that haven't updated in 6 months, I think numbers would drop by at least 50-60%.

I think another reason people lose interest is because they get lured to the free sites and those sites lack any sort of real individuality, plus (0% of the people out there have heard of blogs and blogging but aren't Net savvy enough to really understand what blogging is.
